Anonymous online chat

Tele-Onthaal is a confidential emotional support service where only volunteers provide the support, which makes them the heart of our organisation. Our volunteers chat with anyone who's struggling with life, with those who are going through a difficult time and are in need of a supporting conversation. People can get in touch when something's troubling them or when it all gets too much, our volunteers help talk things through and listen to their worries. The volunteers remain anonymous, and so do the people they're talking to. All conversations are held in a one-on-one chat room and everything they talk about is kept confidential. The volunteers are available for conversations every night, 365 days a year.

Who are the e-volunteers?

Anyone who applies to volunteer goes through months of thorough training so he or she knows what to expect when chatting; they learn to deal with depression, anorexia, suicidal thoughts, relationship and family problems, loneliness, stress, tracking addictions, etc. They also get trained on working with the chat application, and learn more about 'talking across the web'.

How many e-volunteers are involved?

Approximately 100 e-volunteers.

Whom do they address the project to? Who is the recipient?

Anyone who feels the need to talk to someone, who can't cope any longer. There is no typical reason someone might call or chat with our volunteers, just as there is no typical person who contacts Tele-Onthaal.

How do they verify the e-volunteers’ competences before they start the co-operation with them?

They take a course and an internship (all organised in-house by the staff members).

How do they ensure the safety and the quality of the e-volunteers’ work?

The volunteers get permanent training and coaching from staff members. Twice a year they get assessed by a member of staff.
